Riding Mower Brake Service

How to replace brake pads on your ride on lawn mower or garden tractor

Most modern riding mowers and garden tractors have disk brake with one disk located on either side of the transaxle behind the rear wheel. The brake usually doesn't need much adjustments, but the brake pad can get worn out and needs replacement.

This MTD 600 series tractor has the brake unit located on the left side of the transaxle, just in front of the left wheel axle. I supported the rear of the tractor on a wooden block and removed the left rear wheel to gain access to the brake.

Some riding mowers have the brake located on the right side but the procedure is exactly the same.

Lets take a closer look at the brake system. The rod marked "A" is a pulling rod connected to the brake pedal and "B" is a spring connecting the rod to the brake. This spring makes the brake softer and gives the brake pressure while the pedal is locked in parking brake.

"C" is the brake disk, "D" is the pressure lever and "E" is the return spring, releasing the brake while driving. "F" are the bolts holding the brake unit in place. "G" is the adjustment nut.

After removing the bolts "F" and all the brake parts, we should have the following items. The two pads are identical in most riding mowers but if they have a metal plate on one side, this should face away from the disk.

Put the inner brake pad in place first. It should fit into a hole in the transaxle casing like shown. Keep everything clean and free from oil and grease. Fit the brake disk on the shaft.

Hold the press in your hand with the brake lever in the mid position. Put the pins in the brake press as shown and then the pressure plate and the outer pad. Carefully place the assembly to the transaxle casing and fasten the mounting bolts.

Connect the spring from the connection rod as shown in picture 2. Test the brake and it should work fully when the pedal is half way down. If needed, adjust the brake with the nut "G" on picture 2.
