I have seen that there is serious lack of good repair manuals and maintenance books online about lawn mowers. I have managed to collect few of these books myself and I use them when I repair mowers and write articles.

I am going to recommend a few service manuals to You, but before You go buying them I want You to read more about each book to find out if it fits Your need. Because I have the books, I can tell You something about the content so You don't have to buy a book that might disappoint You.

I start with the book that in my opinion is the very best.

The title is Small Engine Care & Repair and the publisher is Creative Publishing International.

The book was written for Briggs and Stratton and it has the Briggs & Stratton logo on it, but it covers many general subjects about small engines that apply to all brands.

It was published in 2003 and therefore covers the newest models, but don't worry if your mower is 10 or 15 years old, the book covers that too.

Small Engine Care & Repair

If you have a garden tractor, 1990 or later, this is probably the book you need.

The title is Yard & Garden Tractor and the publisher is Primedia.

This book covers complete maintenance and repair information for popular yard and garden tractors. I often use this book to guide me through tractor repairs and as a reference when I write my articles.

Yard & Garden Tractor

Complete service information for walk-behind lawn mowers from starting and operation to engine maintenance and repair.

This is a complete service manual for 15 lawn mower manufacturers and 10 engine manufacturers.

This is the 5th edition, published in 2005 and covers: Ariens, Craftsman, John Deere, Foote, Homelite, Honda, Husqvarna, Jacobsen, Kubota, Lawn-Boy, MTD, Murray, Snapper, Toro and Yard-Man mowers.

Engines covered are: Briggs & Stratton, Clinton, Honda, Jacobsen, Kawasaki, Kubota, Lawn-Boy, Sachs, Tecumseh and Toro.

Walk-Behind Lawn Mower

Service and maintenance information for Riding Lawn Mowers from 1992.

This book shows you how to clean the carburetor, adjust the valves or the flywheel brake, fix the rewind or electric starter and change the piston rings, just to name a few subjects.

This is a book you need to have in your garage if you own a riding lawn mower. It covers many manufacturers of mowers and engines and it has a chapter on general information and troubleshooting for your riding mower.
